Der Studiengang im Fokus
The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology (BCCB) at Jacobs University Bremen, Germany is taught in English and combines two fascinating fields of study in one comprehensive degree program. Biochemistry is the study of molecules and chemical processes in living organisms, while Cell Biology is concerned with the structure and physiology of cells, their components and their interactions with the environment. This BSc degree covers human and animal biochemistry, genetics and cell biology, as well as offering a good understanding of plant and microbial life science. This provides students with a broad theoretical understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that form the basis of life.

 

The Bachelor of Science program at Jacobs University Bremen also offers a strong practical component, giving students the opportunity of being directly involved in research right from the beginning of their studies. The course offers excellent laboratory courses to help students gain the hands-on experience they will need to apply for places in graduate schools or high-level internships. Thanks to the broad range of courses available from the life sciences faculty at Jacobs University Bremen and the spectrum of expertise offered by faculty members, the Biochemistry and Cell Biology BSc also allows students to explore related subjects such as biotechnology, biophysics, bioinformatics, organic chemistry and drug design.

Biochemistry and Cell Biology: Program Features
Over the course of their studies, students of the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology gain profound theoretical knowledge in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology. In addition, BSc students learn essential skills such as using their understanding to abstract and transfer knowledge to new research areas. The theoretical education acquired during this Bachelor of Science is complemented by rigorous practical training. Comprehensive laboratory courses in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and microbiology start in the first semester. Theses produced for this bachelor program present research work conducted by the research groups of the life sciences faculty.

 

In studying for this BSc, students will not only acquire excellent technical skills and employ state-of-the-art methods, they will also learn to accurately document and analyze scientific data through the writing of lab reports and the bachelor’s thesis, while following field-specific publication-style guidelines. This interdisciplinary BSc also offers students the opportunity to develop their presentation skills through scientific poster preparation and oral presentations. Students gain experience in using primary scientific literature and are eventually guided towards the development of research strategies which could later be employed in the planning of postgraduate studies.
