Introduction to MA in English Studies
What is English? Is it one specific language, spoken by a substantial part of the people inhabiting the globe in a variety of national, regional and local dialects, or is it, as has been suggested recently by the invention of the term Global English, a lingua franca, more like several different languages with several common denominators?
Similar questions could be asked with respect to literature(s) written in English and to the historical and cultural development of English-language nations and cultures.
English Studies is a two-year full-time (see below) MA program that aims to train students to investigate and answer such questions by broadening their knowledge of the English-speaking world and its cultures as well as by developing their theoretical and methodological skills and communicative competencies to be able to disseminate their knowledge to non-experts.

You will have between 8 and 12 hours of teaching per week, in the form of lectures, class teaching and discussions. There will also be presentations from you and other students, as well as occasional group work.
In addition to the teaching, there are many other exciting activities at the English study in Odense. "Kettle of Fish" is a study group that holds various cultural events such as theatre tours and picnics. Common to the events is that they have professionally relevant content or connection to the study.
The English subject council ((N) ESU-New English Student Union) is the English students 'student policy body, which looks after the students' interests in the student council and at the department. The professional council has its own party committee (Drunk Poets' Society), which arranges various parties as well as the annual Christmas lunch.
Career opportunities
The programme provides professional competence to teach in the upper secondary school and school sector. Traditionally, the courses are aimed at teaching at different levels as well as at research.
However, a survey shows that more than half of English graduates are employed in other professions: There are jobs in:
- radio and television
- book publishers
- advertising agencies
- companies such as education managers
- consultants in various organizations
- journalism
