Introduction to MSc in Cultural Sociology
At the master’s programme in Cultural Sociology, we study the transformations of cultural identities and social relations in the context of globalization, migration, restructuring of the welfare state and the expansion of social media. More specifically, the program addresses changes in popular culture, body culture and gendered identities.
We study how cultural values and the nature of social relations shape economic practices and how emotions shape politics and social life in general; we work with issues of change in rural living conditions and rural identity; we explore civil-society related topics and transformations of state-citizen relations; and we study the emergence and transformations of subcultures, countercultures and social movements.
The programme has a strong focus on classical and contemporary sociological theory and on both quantitative/statistical and advanced qualitative methods for collecting and analyzing empirical data. Our overall purpose is to enable our students to independently investigate and analyze processes of social and cultural transformations.

At the master’s programme in Cultural Sociology, we combine traditional lectures with student-centred teaching methods and problem-based learning. The study activities include student presentations as well as project assignments that must be carried out in student groups or individually. In some courses, students must conduct their own mini-research projects.
The combination of learning activities prepares our students well for their MA thesis and not least for the requirements of the labour market. All courses in the master’s programme are taught in English and we receive several international students at our campuses every year.
The diverse backgrounds of our students contribute to an exciting, dynamic, and cosmopolitan study environment.
